Christmas Island has about 1600 residents who live in a number of settlement areas. 63% of its area is National Park and the rest mainly rainforest.The Island was first discovered by the British and dutch navigators and then the United Kingdom transfered soverignty to Australia.The government is non-self governing territory of Australia. The ethnic make up of Christmas Island is diverse.The climate is tropical,with heat and humidity moderated by trade winds. It has an assorted set of species of flora & fauna found nowhere else in the world!Christmas Island is a focal point for sea birds of various species. Some 86 migrant bird species have been recorded in the islands.To name a few- Red-footed Boobies, Common Noddy, Brown Booby.  Probably the most noticable local is the Red Crab with over 100 million of these vivid red creatures living on the forest floor. These creatures migrate in a spectacular sea of red from the forest to the coast each year for the breeding season. The spectacle is an experience not to be forgotten.CHRISTMAS ISLAND boasts some of the best scuba diving trips in Australia and has some of the longest drop-offs in the world.
